ANNOUNCEMENTS – ALL STUDENTS & STAFF

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
· All students, it is through your hard work that will make Central High School one of the best high schools in the state!
· All students should continue to work hard to improve on your grades. It is not too late to improve and have the high grades that you expect. Just a reminder of our district mission to graduate all students’ college ready and prepared to succeed in life!
· Seniors that still need to take the Math CAPT assessments for graduation, the test will take place on Wednesday, May 9th. Details to follow.
· Tomorrow, May 4th we will be recognizing the “National Day of Silence.” The Day of Silence is a student lead day of action where those who support making anti-lesbian and gay prejudice unacceptable in schools. Show your support by taking a daylong vow of silence. Every student has the right to feel safe in school!
· The Teen Health Center wants to thank everyone who participated in yesterdays Teen Pregnancy Prevention Health Fair; especially the student volunteers. There are 2 winners who guessed how many visits there have been over the last 5 years at Central’s Teen Health Center. The answer is 16,044. The winners are…drum roll….more drumroll…Leeroy Maragh and Shashawny Cummings! Both need to come to room B103 to pick up their $25 cash prize!
· As the weather gets nicer, the possibility for cutting classes or not coming to school increases. Please carefully consider your choices. This is not in your best interest as it will affect your education which is very important if you are serious about being successful in life. Make good choices for you and your family!
· All students should make sure that our school has your correct address and phone numbers. This is very important in case of an emergency or when we need to mail literature to your home; especially next year’s schedule. Please go to your house office and make any necessary changes.
· Detention for today s makeup day for all “houses.” For your benefit, make up for your detention!
TEACHERS AND STAFF
· The Class of 2008 will be having their Ring Dance on Friday, May 18th at The Villa Rosa in Waterbury, CT. If anyone plans on attending, please place a note in Ms. McNeill’s or Ms. Boehm’s mailbox or you can send them an e-mail.
· save the date! The end of year party will be held on Thursday, June 14th at Testo’s. We will be honoring our retirees at this time. Show your Central spirit and plan on attending this fabulous social event. What a great way to end the year! Details to follow.
· The Food Service program is having “Fiesta Salad” tomorrow, May 4th! This is a healthy version of a Taco Salad. Served with a slice of bread; all for just $3. Delicioso!
· Please teachers: All display cases (main lobby and “house offices”) must be emptied by no later than Wednesday, May 9th. The Visual Arts Department is preparing for the annual Arts Festival. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND STAFF
· If anyone has any old cell phones and/or chargers, please donate them to Ms. Riti or to Adrienne in “S House.” These donations will go toward raising money for the Health Department at Central.
· ATTENTION ALL FORMER READ SCHOOL HORIZON STUDENTS: Please sign up your e-mail address in the main office for an upcoming reunion. E-mails will be collected during the week.
· ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS: An electronic device was found Tuesday in the outdoor parking lot between the softball field and tennis courts. If you believe it is yours, please leave a detailed written description of the lost item with the ladies in the main office.
· Ms. Moukouango’s Book Club is meeting today, May 3rd from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in room C101. We will have a guest speaker and there will be snacks. Feel free to bring a friend!
· If anyone has found a black COACH wristlet, please return it to any of the house offices. A reward will be given with or without the contents. Your honesty will be appreciated and no questions asked!
· There will be a mandatory meeting for all GSA members tomorrow, May 4th after school in room A109. Be there promptly!
· Fairfield University has formed a collaboration with Bridgeport High Schools to offer a free camp for students. The camp is designed to broaden access to Science education through hands on laboratory investigations with professors and scientists at Fairfield U. Transportation and meals will be provided for the week long camp in July. See Mr. Andrade or Ms. Pearson for an application. The deadline to apply is May 11th.
· Anyone interested in being in the CHS Marching Band next year, please pick up a sign-up slip on the band room door. Fill one out today!
· Spring job and career fair! Wednesday, May 9th from 3 to 6 p.m. at Bassick High School. Meet representatives from businesses, get information about future training and talk to people with all the answers! Bring your updated resume (the Career Center can help you with that), 2 blue or black pens, dress appropriately and a wear a nice smile! See the career staff or call Ms. Curcio @ 203-576-7369.
· There will be a brief soccer meeting today, May 3rd @ 2:40 p.m. in room E103. Please bring your fundraising money to Coach Silverman. All interested players must attend.
· Any student who is interested in going to the Body Exhibition trip at the South Street Seaport in NYC on Wednesday, May 23rd, please see Ms. Riti or Mr. Denton for a permission slip. Permission slips are due tomorrow, May 4th.
· ATTENTION! Drama Club members: We will be meeting tomorrow, May 4th after school in room A109. All members should attend since we will be discussing the end of year activities, officers for next year and the next 2 shows. See Ms. Lee with any questions in room B204, period 4 and room F205, period 5.
· “No Child Left Behind” vocabulary word for the day: Procrastinate (verb) – To put off; to delay. If you habitually procrastinate, try this technique; never touch a piece of paper without filing it, responding to it, or throwing it out. SYNONYMS: Dawdle; drag; linger.

FRESHMAN

SOPHOMORES
· The sophomore class will be collecting dues during all lunch waves until further notice.
JUNIORS
· Tickets for the Ring Dance are sold out. Tickets will be distributed May 10th through the 15th in the ticket booth during all lunch waves.
· The ring man will be here to collect payments on May 17th and 18th. Ring service days will be on May 21st and 22nd for any problems you might have with your ring.
· Any junior who is attending the ring dance, please pick up your early dismissal slips from your “house office.” For any junior who has not paid for their ticket, see Ms. McNeil or Ms. Boehm immediately.
SENIORS
· Any senior who has not paid for their cap and gown, please see Felicia ASAP.
· The last day to purchase your prom ticket is Monday, May 21st. NO EXCUSES…NO EXTENTIONS!
· The senior banquet is tomorrow evening, May 4th at Leidle’s in Stratford. Tickets are still on sale from Ms. Maltese. The last day to get your ticket is today, May 3rd.
· Seniors planning to run for king or queen should attend a mandatory meeting on Wednesday, May 9th after school in room C118.
· Our last Senior Class meeting will be Wednesday, May 9th. All should attend.
· Any senior who owe obligations, please see Therese in the main office ASAP. Do not wait until last minute as this could result in not being able to participate in the graduation ceremonies. Same goes for if you owe obligations to the library. Pay your library obligations to the library. Please pay any obligations immediately!
PTSO
· The PTSO is hosting a “Post Prom Party” after the prom @ Central High School from 12 to 4 a.m. Our own DJ “Shaq” will provide the music, there will be breakfast/brunch served and LOTS OF FUN! Tickets will be on sale starting Monday, May 7th in the main lobby. The cost is $5. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! Please see Brenda Walker.
· The PTSO will be sponsoring a spring clean-up fundraiser. Items to be collected will be usable and wearable clothing, shoes, household items made of fabric, accessories (pocketbooks, belts, hats and scarves) stuffed animals and hard toys. The drop-off date is Tuesday, May 22nd, in the CHS gym from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please pack items in large plastic bags.
GUIDANCE
· Seniors looking into scholarships should go to our website at www.bridgeportcentral.org. Click on DEPARTMENTS, then GUIDANCE, then SCHOLARSHIP LISTINGS. You can apply online or pick up applications in the Career Center or the Magnet Office. The list will be constantly revised as new scholarships come in, so visit it weekly.
· The annual Donald A. Lepore Scholarship is being offered to former Barnum Elementary School students who upon graduation from high school will pursue a college education. An award of $500 will be given to both a male and female student who have shown academic achievement, service to Central High School, leadership, and who may be in financial need. If you qualify, please see Ms. Joy in “H House” for further information no later than tomorrow, May 4th.
· Senior scholarship awards will be held on Wednesday, June 6th @ 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
· Seniors of Cape Verdean descent should see Ms. Carpenter for a Cape Verdean Scholarship Application. Applications are due by May 31st.
· The Fairfield County Foundation Leonhardt Scholarship is available for seniors. It is a $2,500. scholarship for 4 years that will be awarded to only 2 Central students. You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, financial need, have community involvement or work experience and an essay is required. Applications are available in the Magnet Office or the Career Center. Please return applications to Lisa in the Magnet Office. This is a great opportunity for our seniors! The deadline to apply is today, May 3rd.
· UCONN Mentoring Program is a summer residential program from July 9th thru July 27th for sophomores and juniors. All different mentorship areas are available. You must be in the top 25% of your class with a 3.0 GPA. The deadline to apply is May 7, 2007.
· The Village Initiative Project College Preparatory & Life Skills Program, Inc. (VIP) sponsors APRIL COLLEGE TOUR on April 16th-19th. For more information, please pick up a flier from the counter in the main office.
· ACT – June 9, 2007: Please register by tomorrow, May 4th.
· The SUCCESS Program (Students Undertaking College Career Enhancing Study Skills) is offered to freshmen at Sacred Heart University. This is a free residential program where students supplement their education with classes to develop study skills. There are many activities as well. There is a limited number of student’s that can be accepted. Please see Mr. Moran in the magnet office or Mr. Anastasio in Tech Ed. for an application. This program runs from July 8th to July 20th. This is an excellent opportunity for freshmen with average to below-average grades to improve their study skills, as well as other academic areas.
