ANNOUNCEMENTS – ALL STUDENTS & STAFF
PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
· All students, it is through your hard work that will make Central High School one of the best high schools in the state!
· All students should continue to work hard to improve on your grades. It is not too late to improve and have the high grades that you expect. Just a reminder of our district mission to graduate all students’ college ready and prepared to succeed in life!
· There are about 70 seniors who have not given Felicia in “C House” their measurements for caps and gowns. You will not be able to participate in the graduation ceremonies without your cap and gown, so pleases see Felicia ASAP! Also seniors, graduation pictures will be taken in the auditorium on April 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The price is $35.
· Students, regarding our metal detectors, it has now become part of our procedure for admittance into the building. Please arrive to school on time before the 7:53 bell to avoid detention.
· The use of vulgar language has been used less by our students throughout the school day. Thank you! This type of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated!
· No student is allowed to park in the Staff Parking Lot in the back of the building. If this continues to happen, you will lose your privileges of bringing your car to school. Please adhere to this simple request.
· Students that have not been reporting to study hall, as well as those cutting class, have been receiving detention. However, you will now receive an OSS.
· Please do not leave your jackets, books or book bags in the classrooms. Once the doors are closed, you will not be able to retrieve your belongings.
· I have noticed that more and more students are wearing their ID cards. As a reminder, this is for your safety!
· A continuous reminder to all students that if you are “seen” with any hats or electronic devices, you will be asked for them. Also, no card playing in school.
· A reminder to all students: If you can not make your scheduled detention day, speak with you house principal for a Thursday or Friday detention.
· Any student, unless you are in an after school activity or sport, you are to leave the building at dismissal. The late bus is provided only for detention and those students participating in after-school activities.
· Our building is looking cleaner; please continue not to bring food or drinks out of the café. Let’s keep our building and outside grounds clean by not littering.
TEACHERS AND STAFF
· Teachers, please limit passes throughout the day. There are far too many students roaming the corridors, especially during periods 6 & 7. After 2 p.m. daily, there should be no passes unless it is an extreme emergency.
· The Class of 2008 will be having their Ring Dance on Friday, May 18th at The Villa Rosa in Waterbury, CT. If anyone plans on attending, please place a note in Ms. McNeill’s or Ms. Boehm’s mailbox or you can send them an e-mail, no later than April 5th.
· save the date! The end of year party will be held on Thursday, June 14th at Testo’s. We will be honoring our retirees at this time. Show your Central spirit and plan on attending this fabulous social event. What a great way to end the year! Details to follow.
· Soup is on for tomorrow! This week’s soup is “Cincinnati Chili.” This is a meatless red bean soup seasoned with herbs and spices and cocoa brings out all the exceptional flavors. Served with Honey-Oat bread. $2.25 for a cup with 1 slice of bread and $5 for a quart with 2 slices of bread. Delicious!
STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND STAFF
· The Central High School Baseball Team will participate in the 2nd Annual Bridgeport Baseball Classic at the Harbor Yard Ballpark on Wednesday, April 4th @ 4 p.m. and Saturday, April 7th @ 7 p.m. Other teams competing include Trumbull, Masuk, Bethel, Harding, Bassick and Bullard Havens. All tickets are $3 with proceeds going to the Central Baseball Team. Come on down to Harbor Yard and enjoy 2 great days of baseball in Bridgeport!
· All students that are missing personal items should check the lost and found box in the main office. All items remaining here after Spring Break will be discarded.
· The Caribbean Club will be meeting today, March 29th after school in room B209. All interested students are encouraged to attend.
· The Puerto Rican Parade of Fairfield County proudly presents “Salsa Sensation”; an amateur salsa competition. It will be held tomorrow evening, March 30th at Liceo Cubano on Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Anyone who is interested, please pick up an application in the main office.
· There will be an important meeting for all members of the Cape Verdean Club Thursday, April 5th after school in room F201.
· The Book Club will meet on Wednesday, April 4th and Tuesday, April 10th @ 2:30 p.m. Be prepared to discuss chapters 6 & 7 on the 4th and chapters 8 & 9 on the 10th. We will have a guest speaker also. See Ms. Moukouanga if you can not attend.
· Ms. Moukouanga is performing in “The Crucible,” a play about the Salem Witch hunts. Opening night is Saturday, March 31st at Battell Chapel on Yale Campus in New Haven. Show time is 7:30 p.m. More performances will be on April 1st, 14th and 15th. See Ms. Moukouanga with any questions.
· Building with Books will meet today, March 29th after school in room C208. Russ Larkin from “Service for Peace” will be speaking about special activities to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All members are encouraged to attend and new members are welcome.
· The Central High School Chess Club will be holding a “Round Robin” chess tournament tomorrow, March 30th after school in room E111. Entrance fee is $1.
· March is almost over and everyone needs a good laugh! Come see the CHS Drama Club’s presentation of an “Evening of comedy!” First up: “The Actor’s Nightmare.” Ever wonder what would happen if you found yourself in a play and did not know your lines? See what happens to one poor soul. Next: “Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You.” ‘Nuff said! The shows take place in the main auditorium tonight, tomorrow and Saturday, March 29th, 30th and 31st @ 7 p.m. See Mr. Stover in Room A109 for tickets.
· Students that picked up the Puerto Rican Parade applications for Mr., Ms. and Teen Puerto Rico, please hand in the completed applications to Ms. Candelario or Mr. Ortiz by the end of the day tomorrow, March 30th..
· Central High School is starting a Curling Team! Never heard of Curling? It is a combination of bowling, bocce, shuffle board and hockey. Don’t miss out on this new activity! Please see Coach Graf in H105 to sign up.
· There will be a mandatory soccer meeting for all interested players today, March 29th @ 2:45 p.m. in Room E103. Bring your progress report and do not be late. The meeting will last about ½ hour.
· Those students that are interested in RCA for next year, please see Ms. Dougherty in “S House.”
· The FCCLA fashion show is scheduled for April 5th @ 6 p.m. Mark your calendars! You may purchase your tickets from any FCCLA member or advisor, Ms. Griffin or Ms. Williams. Thank you for your support!
· ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS! It’s back! The Central Junior Police! If you ever had the desire to become a police officer or medical assistant, then this is for you. Come test your strength at one of the most intense physical training programs in the city. For more information, see Officer Harrison in the security office.
· “No Child Left Behind” vocabulary word for the day: Languid (adjective) – Without energy; slow; sluggish; listless. The hot, humid weather of August can make anyone feel languid. SYNONYMS: Apathetic; enervated.

FRESHMAN
SOPHOMORES
· There will be a short but important sophomore class meeting on Monday, April 2nd after school in room E113. See Ms. Mezzanotte in room E103 or Ms. Harun in room E113.
JUNIORS
· The Ring Dance is fast approaching! The balance for your tickets are due ASAP; no later then Thursday, April 5th. No ticket will be sold after that date. The cost is $80. In order to purchase a ticket, you must have paid your assessment which is now $30. Those students who made deposits for the bus, the bus has been cancelled and your deposits will be put toward the cost of your tickets.
· The next dates the ring man will be here to take orders and collect payments will be on April 12th and 13th, then again on May 17th and 18th. Ring service days will be on May 21st and 22nd for any problems you might have with your ring.
· All 11th grade students must get a physical! The blue physical form was mailed home on January 17th. This form needs to be filled out by the parent or guardian and your doctor. This form should be returned to the school nurse. All doctor appointments must be made for after school hours. Sport physicals are acceptable; obtain a copy from your coach. If you do not have health insurance, sign up with our School Based Health Center to get your physical done there. Only those student’s that turn in their physical will be eligible to obtain their senior schedule.
SENIORS
· Prom invitations are on sale from Ms. Maltese in Room C118 or in the ticket booth during period 6. For the seniors who paid their dues, the cost is $75. For those seniors who have not paid their dues, the cost is $100. First come, first serve.
· The senior banquet is scheduled for May 4th at Leidle’s in Stratford. Tickets go on sale Monday, April 2nd; $35 the first week and $40 the second week. See Ms. Maltese in room C118 or in the ticket booth period 6.
· Senior scholarship awards will be held on Wednesday, June 6th @ 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
· Central High School offers a variety of scholarships, prizes, and awards to its graduating seniors. In order to be considered for these awards, seniors must complete an application form and return it to the H House Secretary no later than the close of school on Wednesday, April 11, 2007. Applications for Central High School Scholarships, Prizes, and Awards may be obtained from your guidance counselor, House office, or Mrs. Smith’s office. Only those seniors who return the completed form by the deadline, the close of school on Wednesday, April 11, 2007, will be considered for a Central High School award.

GUIDANCE
· Seniors looking into scholarships should go to our website at www.bridgeportcentral.org. Click on DEPARTMENTS, then GUIDANCE, then SCHOLARSHIP LISTINGS. You can apply online or pick up applications in the Career Center or the Magnet Office. The list will be constantly revised as new scholarships come in, so visit it weekly.
· UCONN Mentoring Program is a summer residential program from July 9th thru July 27th for sophomores and juniors. All different mentorship areas are available. You must be in the top 25% of your class with a 3.0 GPA.
· JUNIORS: There will be a trip to Central Connecticut State University on April 9th. You must have at least a 2.5 GPA. You can obtain a permission slip from Ms. Dougherty in “S” House or Ms. Gore in the Career Center.
· Project Oceanology (Ocean Diversity Institute) is a 1 week free residential program during the April vacation for students interested in marine science at the Coast guard Academy. This is available for current freshman and sophomores. The deadline to apply is tomorrow, March 30th. See Mr. Moran in the Magnet Office for an application.
· Montana State University will be at Central today, March 26th @ 1:30 p.m. in the library. Any interested students should attend.
· SAT – May 5, 2007: Please register by the end of the day today, March 29th.
· ACT – June 9, 2007: Please register by May 4th.
· The SUCCESS Program (Students Undertaking College Career Enhancing Study Skills) is offered to freshmen at Sacred Heart University. This is a free residential program where students supplement their education with classes to develop study skills. There are many activities as well. There is a limited number of student’s that can be accepted. Please see Mr. Moran in the magnet office or Mr. Anastasio in Tech Ed. for an application. This program runs from July 8th to July 20th. This is an excellent opportunity for freshmen with average to below-average grades to improve their study skills, as well as other academic areas.
